S A N D I E G O

We went to Jerome a few years ago in October. It is a neat little town with a lot of history. It was once a booming copper mining town with as many as 15,000 residents. Now it is a little art town with a lot of shops and galleries. The population is less than 500. It has survived numerous fires.

We stayed at the Jerome Grand Hotel, which used to be a hospital. You can see it in the photo on the right as the large building in the top center. It is a 3 story hotel with stark furnishings and little rooms. It feels more like a Motel 6 to me. There is no carpet and the doors have 1 inch gaps underneath them, so you can imagine how noisy it is when people walk up and down the hallways.

We were awoken at 6am by some asswipe on the balcony who had to call his friend on his cell phone to tell him how beautiful the sunrise was. There is one large balcony on the top floor that everyone shares and the cardboard walls didn't mask the noise.

The hotel wasn't a total bust, because interestingly enough, they have an excellent restaurant called the Asylum (since the hotel used to be a hospital). Usually a nice restaurant in a small town means $20 entrees with Denny's style food and presentation. This place was better than most restaurants in Tucson. They have an amazing chef comparable to resort restaurants. Since it was October, the Asylum was decorated for halloween. The decorations were well done also, complete with spiderwebs and dry ice everywhere.

The hotel looks really cool from the outside and the views were excellent, we just didn't need to hear about them that early.

I don't remember what the building is in the picture on the right, but it sure is big for such a small town.
