H A W A I I

In July of 2006, We went to the big island of Hawaii. It is amazing how a small island can have so many different landscapes and climate zones. Some areas are just barren lava rock and other areas are rain forests or grassy hills and plains.

The highlight of our trip was taking a helicopter ride over the Kohala Mountains on the north part of the island. This part of the island is grassy hills with waterfalls and huge canyons.

The helicopter was an incredible experience and the scenery was amazing. The ride lasted about 50 minutes and the pilot narrated the trip. I was in the middle back seat, so Merrie took all of the pictures. She felt a little motion sick at one point, so I took the camera from her.

I think it was because she was disoriented in the canyon. We went from 5000 feet to 1200 feet, and you couldn't tell which way was up, because all you could see is green. The pilot was giving everyone a chance to see the waterfalls, so he was turning 360 degrees and going up and down. I thought it was great fun, but Merrie...not so much.

Once we got out of the canyon, the pilot flew along the coast. There were a lot of cliffs with waterfalls spilling into the ocean and the water was a blue-green.
